The 5th High School of Volos Magnesia , is a public school with students aged between 15 and 17 years. It is located in an industrial area in the East Central Greece, by Pagasitikos Bay. Today, due to the economic crisis the city is plagued by a lack of resources and, therefore, many students are unable to further extracurricular learning opportunities outside of formal schooling.
We have 271 students and employ approximately30 teachers a year, which provide all possible learning opportunities within and outside the education system, spending time and for extracurricular activities such as theatre, concerts, sports, reading. Each year according to our needs.
We participate in national health and cultural programs every year. Students come mainly from the middle class and some from underprivileged social environments (family unemployment, single-parent families) low income. We have also children from countries such as Albania, Russia, Romania.
The school is the core of social and educational integration not only for students but also for the whole local community, through initiatives such as:
- Organizing educational and cultural events in cultural centres and at school, open to the local community
- Excellent and effective cooperation of local associations (parents and cultural, sporting environment) with the school community to provide knowledge and skills (such as computers)
- Participation in student competitions (mathematics, sports, translation, chemistry, biology, etc.)
-we offer any kind of support to families with feeding or health problems.
-we have organised seminars for teachers, parents and students on issues related to in-school violence, health and the early school leaving .
Despite the economic crisis, teachers and students are open and available to actively participate in programs within and outside school for the benefit of the whole school community, because it is a good way to improve knowledge, skills and be inspired by any kind of creativity.
We did a Comenius project (2011-2013) about the Environmental protection. It was a large opening for our school to the European Community and a great experience for students and teachers.
The school aims to innovate practices of teaching youth, the awareness and understanding of other cultures, giving to teachers but also to later students the opportunity to develop a network of international contacts, to actively participate in the society and to develop a sense of European citizenship and identity.
Our teachers, with the project we are doing now (2016-2018) " Developing trans and inter curricular skills for the 21st century"will have the opportunity to bring skills and to communicate effectively with other educational partners. We will acquire knowledge about the management of European programs of the 21st century. We will improve our skills in using new technologies. Learning to use creative teaching techniques, inter and trans-curricular, to meet the specific learning needs, we will ensure positive results in teaching-learning for our students. We have already been trained in Moodle Platform and other innovated methods of teaching which we can dissiminate. We will organise a science event at school and university next year.. So, we can open this very useful event to all schools and local federation community. We will also annonce all these results on our school blog. So, all teachers, parents and students can be always permanently informed.
